Satyajit Ray and Working Life; Legendary Film Maker; Biography




SATYAJIT ROY; AND HIS WORKING LIFE 


Our world has produced a number of great personalities who adorn the glory and dignity of Bengal and India and even the world very much. One of them is Satyajit Ray.

Among the famous filmmakers in India or Bengal,if we say about the best, then it is definitely none other than Satyajit Ray.  He is the pride of every Bengali This great man was born on 2nd May 1921 in Kolkata. At that time the whole of India was under British rule . His father was also famous storyteller Sukumar Roy, whose words may not be unknown to any Bengali and his mother was Supravya Roy.

 Satyajit Ray's grandfather was also a great legend. He was  a famous writer and painter of Bengal and he also known to all Bengalies. He is none other than Upendrakishore Roychowdhury himself, who is also called the pioneer of Indian printing industry. When he was just three years old, his father Sukumar Roy died  and Supravha Devi then reared him in great difficulty.

 His educational career started in 1929, when he was about 6 years old  He was first admitted to Baliganj Government High School and then after finishing school life he admitted to Presidency College, Kolkata for studying economics.
 In 1940, Ray's mother insisted that he admitted to the Visva-Bharati University, founded by Rabindranath Tagore in Santiniketan.After studying there,  he later admitted that he had learned a lot from the famous painters Nandalal Basu and Binod Bihari Mukherjee, which gave him a deep respect for Eastern art.

 Ray, however, did not study at Visva-Bharati University for long  He left Santiniketan in 1943 and moved back to Calcutta, where he started working as a "Junior Visualizer" for DJ Kimmer, a British advertising agency, for a salary of only Rs.80

When the year 1947 came to an end  The year India finally became an independent country  But by then, Ray had become so much popular in the advertising world and founded the "Calcutta Film Society" in the same year.

 Then in 1949, French filmmaker Jean Reno came to Calcutta to make his film "The River".  Then he got  Ray as an assistant to find a suitable place for his movie. Many persons believe that John Reno played a key role in Ray's life in making realistic films. From him he learned the proper technique of making movies


 In the same year, 1949, Ray married his distant sister and longtime girlfriend Vijaya Das.  Vijaya Devi was the only woman whom Ray considered to be his dearest friend and the biggest critic of his movies.

 Then Satyajit Ray finally decided to make a movie one day  The Italian new realist film "Laudri di Bichiklette", a movie in English called Bicycle Thieves (Bicycle Chor), inspired him to make "Pather Panchali". At that time, for about ten thousand rupees, he bought  rights to the story "Pather Panchali" from Rama Banerjee, the widow of Bibhutibhushan Banerjee.  And then he started making movies.

 The film was finally released in all cinema theaters in Kolkata on August 26, 1955.  The film received rave reviews from viewers and critics soon after it is released.The film has been screened in various parts of India and outside India for a long time.The success of Satyajit's next film "Aparajita" made him more  well known in the international arena.  In this film, the eternal conflict between young Apu's ambition and his mother's love is vividly portrayed.


His some more immortal creations are Paraspathar, Jalsaghar, Apur Sansar, Charulata, Gupi Gain Bagha Bain  etc that whichs bengalies will never forget.
 Many filmmakers think that his "Aparajita" movie was much better than "Pather Panchali".  The film was later awarded the "Golden Lion" at a film festival in Venice, one of the highest awards in the world of cinema.

He passed away on 23rd April in 1992. This Legendary soul has no death acctually, he will remain alive for ever in every heart of Bengali.
